Breakthrough New Haven
We have supported Breakthrough New Haven, an academic program for high potential New Haven middle school students, since the establishment of the Institute. We have worked with Breakthrough teachers in developing or revamping existing science modules in both the biological and physical sciences, as well as provided equipment necessary for the summer program.
Most recently, a PEB student in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science developed a two part, hands-on module that introduces Breakthrough New Haven participants to circuits, electronics, and programming.
Laboratory tours for undergraduates
We have established a strong partnership with Connecticut College, and have been providing undergraduates with laboratory tours to tell them about ongoing research in Institute affiliated labs and show them instrumentation not available to them at their home institution. The visits comprise the better part of a day and include a luncheon with graduate students in Yale’s Integrated Graduate Program in Physical and Engineering Biology.
Interactive science talks for schoolchildren
We have hosted groups of 4-7th grade science campers from the Eleanor Buck Wolf Nature Center (Wethersfield, CT) as well as many loca school children, in partnership with Yale’s Pathways to Science, to excite our your audience about science and help them learn about the types of research projects scientists pursue, the types of questions they ask, and the scientific method in general. Graduate students in Yale’s Integrated Graduate Program in Physical and Engineering Biology as well as participants in the NSF REU program work together to design a fun-filled half-day, complete with short, 4-5 minute presentations, and lots of hands-on activities that build upon the presentations.
